Artist Statement
Everyone has a strong connection to home. In a way, it represents their history, their sense of place. I’ve always been interested in history. I am fascinated by not only the documented, well known histories, but the forgotten ones. History can be told through architecture, and ever since I was a child, abandoned and rundown homes have intrigued me. For the people who lived in these places, their stories were never told, but they were important to them. The crumbling walls, broken windows, and sagging roofs all hold mystery of stories long forgotten.
Painting and drawing these places is cathartic to me. I am finding the beauty in the forgotten; elevating the history of these seemingly decrepit structures. I use charcoal, ink, and graphite because they cause a ghostly feel, emphasizing the idea of the forgotten and creating a sense of mystery in which the viewer might want to know more. It represents the scarring of the house itself.
